Students from Daphne High School English teacher Andre´ LaPalme's sophomore and senior classes compete in the school's first "Poetry Out Loud" contest. Sophomore Amanda Hein won for her recitation of Walt Whitman's "O Captain, My Captain" and will represent Daphne at the state-level. The competition--involving 200,000 students nationwide--culminates in Washington, D.C. where the winner receives a $20,000 scholarship.

Baldwin County Band Festival

Daphne High competes in the Baldwin County Band Festival, where the school hosted to the county-wide band jamboree Oct. 15. Marching bands from Robertsdale, Foley, Spanish Fort, Fairhope, Daphne and Baldwin County high schools performed at Jubilee Stadium.

Wine Festival at Five Rivers

Catholic Social Services in Mobile held its second annual Wine Festival at Five Rivers Delta Resource Center in Spanish Fort, where about 600 guests enjoyed more than 100 different wines. Wine were available for tasting as well as for sale. Food from area chefs was prepared and cooking demonstrations were also part of the festivities.

Spanish Fort Elementary School held Pink Day Oct. 17 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Students got to enjoy pink lemonade for a $1 donation and wear pink shirts and blue jeans to school, also for a $1 donation. The school raised about $890 to benefit its Relay for Life team.
